SEIU Local 2 and allies rally outside Ottawa hotel to demand reinstatement of worker
Up to 50 workers, union members, and community allies rallied outside the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa to demand the reinstatement of a union steward employed by cleaning contractor ServeGreen who was abruptly fired after speaking out about alleged workplace conditions, says SEIU Local 2.
According to SEIU Local 2, the janitor was fired in August after coming forward with his experiences as part of an unfair labour practice (ULP) complaint filed by the union in July. The complaint alleges that ServeGreen engaged in threats, intimidation and coercion, and interfered with workers’ right to initiate a work stoppage as they organized toward a strike.
The rally brought together supporters from across the labour movement and community, including ACORN, CUPE, PSAC, OSSTF, Justice for Workers, the Canadian Labour Congress, PIPSC, Unifor, and the Community Party of Canada.
