Over the Easter long weekend, workers ratified a new contract. The strike is cancelled.

Dexterra janitors in Vancouver win new contract

We are 54 janitors employed by Dexterra Group in Metro Vancouver. We’re in this position because Dexterra has backed us into a corner and we will not be bullied by our employer into accepting a collective agreement that doesn’t respect or value our work.

UPDATE

The two-year agreement has wage increases that reflect the city-wide industry standards of $1 increase per year, an enhanced health care spending account, and the start of a pants allowance of $50 per year.
to continue to work.

The employer will also cover the cost of MSP for international students and provide a six week leave of absence for workers who need to process their immigration status to continue to work.

Worker Voices

“The company’s current offer doesn’t even cover the simplest cost of living increases that we need to survive. The cost of living is skyrocketing, and our wages need to give us some security”.

Gemma Dimaano,

“Our demands are not unreasonable. We’re just looking to be treated with the respect that we deserve as workers”.

Rising up for fair wages

When the cost-of-living goes up, we rise up for fair wage increases. We are not paid enough to live in Vancouver. We are seeking $3.20 over the next three years ($1.20 +1 +1). It would bring wages up to $22.77 by June 2028 for most workers. Those performing heavy duty work would go up to $23.65, and lead hands would top the pay grid at $24.40.

Dexterra refuses to pay fair wages & proposes claw back in benefits

Dexterra is only offering $1.80 over the entire time span, and it falls well short of what we need to keep up with rising costs.  They told us the only way to pay us the wages we need, is to claw back our benefits. Life for workers is hard enough. It is unreasonable to demand working families give up hard-earned benefits needed by our families for things like medications so that we can earn a fair wage.
